A Humble Gift
Have you ever received a gift that was wrapped with incredible care? Some people will go to great lengths to wrap a Christmas gift. They will create beautiful and ornate packages that are so beautiful that you hardly want to open them. It seems more fitting to admire the craftsmanship of the gift giver.
"This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” Luke 2:12
Wrapped in cloth
Jesus did not come in the most elaborate way; there was no fanfare, neon signs, or extravagant party. The Creator of the universe, the Almighty God who spoke creation into existence, came and humbled himself to become a little baby born in a stable in Bethlehem. He was wrapped in cloth and placed in a manger. He could have wrapped in the finest silk and linen of the time and it would still not have been fitting for the God of the universe.
However, this manger scene is a perfect picture of the life and ministry of the Son of God. Jesus came to walk alongside the broken; he healed the sick and spent time with sinners. A humble gift with an extravagant life and message. It is fitting that Jesus’ birth would line up with his message of the Kingdom that is coming near to us. Hope for tomorrow, peace for today, and love to share with those in need.
This Christmas season, let's enjoy all the sights, sounds, and gits (those are all wonderful!). But, let's not forget that sometimes the best gifts come to us in humble and simple ways. Humility is something we could all use a little more of this Christmas season.
